World Bank-Financed Lab Completed in Shenzhen

Shenzhen City's first major state research laboratory was unveiled recently at the city's research institute set up by Qinghua University.

According to local sources, the lab, built through World Bank loans, will serve as an important base for carrying out basic research on electrical power, related scientific innovations and training of high-level qualified personnel in China. Research on digital emulation will also be included at the lab, which will be opened to enterprises.

Professor Lu Qiang from Qinghua University, also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Wu Fuli, deputy head of the University of Hong Kong, will act as co-directors of the new lab.

The University of Hong Kong will provide 1.6 million Hong Kong dollars as a startup fund for the new lab, while the local city government of Shenzhen, also one of the country's first four founding special economic zones, will also allocate five million yuan (about US$602,410) as a fund for scientific research at the lab.
