Egyptian Official to Head UN Western Asia Commission

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday appointed Mervat M. Tallawy of Egypt as the new Executive Secretary for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

The appointment marked the second time that a woman had been chosen to head one of the UN's five regional economic commissions, Annan told a press conference in New York-based UN headquarters. The UN commission for Europe is headed by Danuta Hubner.

Due to take up her duties in January, Tallawy pledged to rejuvenate the commission to help the people of the region meet their expectations.

According to UN information, Tallawy, with a long career in foreign affairs and public service, is currently serving as the Secretary-General of the National Council for Women in Egypt.

She has served on the UN Commission on the Status of Women and worked in other UN posts, focusing on population and gender issues.
