China Keen on Boosting Economic Ties with Kuwait: Official

Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wu Bangguo said Wednesday in Kuwait City that China wants to expand economic ties with oil-rich Kuwait.

In a meeting with Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Wu said that since China and Kuwait established diplomatic ties in 1971, noticeable achievements have been witnessed as a result of friendly cooperation in all fields between the two countries.

He highlighted the stable relations in the economic and trade domains during the past three decades, adding that there is still much room for further development.

Wu said as Kuwait is one of the world's major oil producing states, China is willing to establish long-term cooperative relations in the oil field with the northern Gulf country.

The Chinese vice premier also invited the Kuwaiti government and businessmen to bring investment to western China, as China is implementing an ambitious plan to develop its under-developed western provinces and autonomous regions of mainly ethnic minorities.

In addition to economic and trade ties, Wu also voiced China's keenness to boost relations in the political, cultural and other fields.

He reaffirmed China's support for Kuwait's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. China opposes any kinds of threats posed to Kuwait, he said.

Wu praised the important role Kuwait has played in promoting harmony and coordination among countries in the region.

He said that as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, which shoulders responsibility for world peace and security, China is willing to contribute to trying to achieve peace and stability in the Gulf region as early as possible, through closer coordination and cooperation with Kuwait.

Wu Bangguo arrived here Tuesday for a three-day visit to Kuwait, the last leg of his three-nation tour, which has already taken him to Sudan and Egypt.

For his part, Sheikh Sabah said Kuwait is also willing to strengthen cooperation with China and will play a positive role in China's economic development.

He reiterated Kuwait's support for the "One China" policy.
