Second-Generation Test-Tube Baby Born in Beijing

A fully-grown baby girl was born after a successful Cesarean operation in Beijing Maternity Hospital on November 16. She is the third test-tube baby after two twin girls and the first second-generation test-tube baby born in the hospital.

According to Beijing Evening, parents of the baby are both infertile - mother with two fallopian tubes blocked and father troubled by a low sperm motility rate. This prevented natural pregnancy; conventional test-tube method proved to no avail. But ICSI technique at the hospital helped to give them a baby completely of their own.

Beijing Maternity Hospital has to this day by accomplishing its research and clinic practice on first and second-generation test-tube baby technology successfully given birth to three girls and one boy. By now, the third-generation technology is being tapped.

The first-generation method is mainly used to treat women's infertility due to fallopian tube problems, but gives no help to men's infertility. The improved second-generation method, through ICSI technique, is able to deal with problems from both sides.

The third-generation refers to genetic examination before embryo is transplanted to ensure the embryo transplanted carrying no hereditary disease into the womb.
