Florida Court Ruling Unacceptable, Bush Campaign SaysTexas Governor George W. Bush's campaign said Tuesday that a ruling by Florida's Supreme Court on the validity of hand recounts in the presidential elections in the state is "unfair and unacceptable" and it will consider "whatever remedies" to correct the court decision. In a statement released in the Florida capital of Tallahassee, Bush's legal adviser and former US Secretary of State James Baker said that justices of Florida Supreme Court "have in effect rewritten the electoral laws" in a manner that "clearly overreaches" their judicial power. "It is not fair to change the election rules in Florida by the judicial fiat after the election is being held," he said. "It is not fair to change the rules and standards governing the counting or recounting the votes after it appears one side has concluded that is the only way to get the votes it needs," Baker added. He said that "it is simply not fair ... to change the rules either in middle of the game or after the game is being played." "We intend to examine and to consider whatever remedies we may have to correct this unjust result," he noted. Florida's Supreme Court ruled earlier Tuesday that state election officials must accept amended vote recounts until Sunday or Monday, making it possible to include hand recounts in three counties in the final totals of presidential ballots in Florida. |
