US Grants UPS Direct Flight to ChinaThe US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Tuesday a tentative decision to grant the United Parcel Service (UPS) the right to operate direct flight to China."The DOT made a bold, forward-looking decision that recognizes the new economy and UPS's role in the global marketplace," said Jim Kelly, Chairman and CEO of UPS. In a news release sent out from Atlanta, where UPS is headquartered, Kelly said that "the tentative decision will benefit UPS people, American businesses and the principle that free and fair trade is a vital component to growing our prosperity in this new economy." UPS, which currently serves China through Hong Kong, will start direct flight to China in April 2001, and it plans to fly six frequencies using Boeing 747 aircraft, with four of those flights originating in Ontario, California, and two originating in Newark, New Jersey, according to the news release. This decision will greatly expand UPS's ability to serve "this vital market," which the company has done since 1988 through its agreement with Sinotrans, its partner in China, the news release says. UPS is the world's largest express carrier and package delivery company, serving more than 200 countries and territories around the world, and it has been rated the World's Most Admired mail, package and freight delivery company in a Fortune magazine survey. |
