Cuba Seeks Extradition of Man Accused of Planning to Murder CastroCuba has requested the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, who was arrested last Friday in Panama City for allegedly planning to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro. While Castro was attending the 10th Ibero-American summit in Panama City, he warned the Panamanian government on Friday that Posada Carriles was planning to assassinate him. Carriles and three Cuban-American accomplices were then arrested by Panamanian police. The Cuban government has accused Posada Carriles of being involved in several terrorist actions, including the 1976 bombing of a Cuban plane, which killed 73 people passengers, and the 1997 bomb campaign, which Posada had admitted to in a newspaper interview. Cuba's Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said on Monday he had called his Panamanian counterpart, Jose Miguel Aleman, for the extradition of Posada Carriles and his accomplices, Pedro Ramon Rodriguez, Carlos Vicente Lopez Sanchez and Jose Hurtado. Perez Roque said that he had requested the Panamanian government to keep Posada and his accomplices in custody until Cuba extended its formal request for extradition. He said the government and people will not give up on the extradition and trial of Carriles until justice is fulfilled. Roque also disclosed reports from Cuba's Intelligence Service on the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), one of the most radical anti-Castro groups in the United States, and its plans to eliminate Castro. But CANF denied accusations that the group supports Carriles. |
