EU Urges Peruvians to Respect DemocracyThe European Union (EU) foreign ministers urged the Peruvian authorities November 20 to uphold democratic values following President Alberto Fujimori's resignation announcement."The European Union appeals to the sense of responsibility of the political and social leaders and hopes, with the Peruvian people, that they express their commitment to democratic institutions and their support for constitutional order," the ministers said in a statement after a regular meeting in Brussels. The foreign ministers of the 15-nation bloc said this would facilitate a peaceful transition of power in Peru and would keep elections on track. Fujimori, who is in Japan for a visit, announced late Sunday he would submit his resignation by letter within 48 hours to the president of the Peruvian Congress. His move has invoked speculations that he may seek asylum and not return to his country. Currently, many Peruvians believe Fujimori has fled the country to avoid possible implication in widening investigations into his ex-spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos. |
