Fatal Shooting Incident Occurs in Gaza

A Palestinian security official confirmed Wednesday that five Palestinians were killed by Israeli tanks in southern Gaza earlier in the day.

Abdul Razzak Al-Mugaida, director of the Palestinian Public Security Service, said that Israeli tanks opened fire at two civilian cars driving near the Morag Jewish settlement and killed the people in the vehicles.

Israeli army had said that the Palestinians were killed in a shootout with the Israeli soldiers who believed the vehicles were carrying Palestinian terrorists trying to charge the settlement.

It was not clear so far if there were other injuries.

Israeli army initially barred ambulances from approaching the scene after the incident, witnesses said.

The deadly shooting occurred shortly after a explosion took place near another Jewish settlement also in southern Gaza. Israeli army has confirmed the blast, but said that no casualties or property damage were caused because the bomb went off in midair before reaching the target.

The Palestinian territories have been beset by clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces over the past eight weeks, which have claimed over 250 lives, mostly Palestinians, and injured thousands of others.

The air strikes against the targets of the Palestinian security forces in Gaza is a "measured response" to the bombing of an Israeli school bus early November 20 in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Ehud Barak's security advisor Danny Yatom told Israel Radio.

Earlier, at least two people were killed and 12 others injured in the bus bombing.
