Indonesia Needs Changes, Adjustments: President

Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid said Wednesday that as a new democratic country, Indonesia needs many changes and adjustments, adding that supremacy of law should be a guidance in the course of the transition process.

But Wahid added that the needed-changes could not be achieved just in one night.

"A democratic country needs many changes but these can not be achieved only in one night," the president said in Surabaya, the second largest city in the country.

"The formation of a democratic community should be equipped with the supremacy of law," Antara news agency quoted the president as saying.

Wahid said that "the two (democracy and supremacy of law) are a must and can not be separated."

"Upholding the law is one way to show that the law is the only thing to be obeyed. It means that everybody is the same before the law," he said.

The Muslim cleric also warned all elements in the county over possible the country's breakdown amid mounting demand from several provinces on the independence.

He emphasized the importance of the nation unity in dealing with the ongoing multidimensional problem. "Unity means that everybody is no different from others and the government can not treat people unfairly," he said.

For the sake of the nation unity, Wahid indicated, that all wrong doers such as former leaders in the past could be considered to be pardoned albeit the court might find them guilty.

"It sound strange, but it can bind us together. It can maintain our country," he said but not specified whom were eligible to be pardoned.
