Southwest China's Sichuan Province has issued university diplomas to 180,000 self-taught people since examinations for such people were introduced in 1984.

The Chinese Government acknowledges the educational background of the self-taught people passing university-level examinations.

More than 2.4 million people in Sichuan have taken 34 college-level exams over the past 16 years. Some 100 majors are now available for self-taught people to take such exams.
