Hong Kong Mobile Phone Ownership Rises by 50 Percent

Hong Kong's mobile phone ownership has surged by 50 percent in the past two years and over a quarter of the owners have replaced their handsets in the past six months, a new study found.

At least 71 percent of Hong Kong people aged from 15 to 64 own a mobile phone, with a growth rate of 50 percent in mobile phone ownership in the past two years, the research issued Tuesday by the Hong Kong-based Asia Market Intelligence showed.

Hong Kong tops the chart of phone ownership in the Asia-Pacific region, closely followed by Taiwan at 70 percent and South Korea at 67 percent, the study showed.

Figures from the local telecommunications authority showed that there are 4.83 million mobile phones, including 800,000 pre-pais SIM cards, in Hong Kong.
