Israel Says Air Strikes on Gaza "Measured Response"

Israel said November 20 evening that its air strikes against Palestinian targets in Gaza city were a "measured response."

The air strikes against the targets of the Palestinian security forces in Gaza is a "measured response" to the bombing of an Israeli school bus early November 20 in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Ehud Barak's security advisor Danny Yatom told Israel Radio.

Israeli helicopter gunships and warships began missile attacks on targets in Gaza city at around 6 pm (1600 GMT) and fired at least 40 missiles at the city in an hour.

Police stations, the headquarters of the Fatah movement, led by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, his personal guard, known as Force 17, and radio and television stations were hit by missiles.

Israeli helicopter gunships also fired missiles at the Jabaliya Refugee Camp on the outskirts of Gaza. This was the first time that Israel targeted a Palestinian refugee camp in nearly two months of clashes with Palestinian protestors.

The strikes took place hours after Israel held Tanzim, military wing of Fatah, responsible for the bus bombing near the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom and Israel's security cabinet decided to take retaliatory actions.

Two Jewish settlers were killed and nine others, including five school children, wounded in the bomb attack.
