Spanish Ex-Minister Shot Dead

Former Spanish health minister Ernest Lluch has been shot dead at his home in Barcelona.

Regional officials blamed the shooting on the Basque separatist group ETA, though no group has said it carried out the attack.

Mr Lluch, who served in Spain's former Socialist Party-led government, was shot in the basement carpark of the building where he lived, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

The agency said the attack occured aroung 2200 (2100GMT) November 21. Shortly afterwards a car bomb exploded in a residential area on the outskirts of the city. No one was injured in the blast.

Police say the destroyed vehicle may have been a get away car. People in Madrid say in previous attacks attributed to ETA, the attackers have blown up their vehicles to destroy evidence.

Twenty people have died this year in attacks for which ETA has claimed responsibility.

About 800 people have died in ETA attacks since it took up arms for a Basque independent state in 1968.
