Israeli President Urges Palestinians to Stop Violence

Israeli President Moshe Katsaw Tuesday called on the Palestinians to stop violence and return to negotiations to keep the achievements of self-rule, Israel Radio reported.

Katsaw made the remarks during his inspection at the Kfar Darom Jewish settlement in central Gaza, adding that "the Palestinians ought to boast the major achievements they have scored during the past seven years by negotiations and they can make more achievements."

He warned that the Palestinians would surely suffer losses if they continue to use gunfire and violence.

Israeli combat helicopters pounded the Gaza Strip Monday evening with missiles in retaliation for a bombing attack on a school bus near the Kfar Darom settlement Monday, which killed two Israelis and wounded nine others.

Katsaw also expressed support for establishing a national unity cabinet in Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak was expected to inspect the Israeli troops stationed in Gaza Tuesday afternoon.

The ongoing clashes between the Palestinians and Israeli troops since September 28 have claimed over 250 lives, most of them Palestinians, and left thousands of others wounded.
