Seminar on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights Held in Beijing

A symposium on economic, social and cultural rights, jointly organized by various Chinese departments and the visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, and her party, was held Tuesday afternoon.

President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Li Tieying, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, made a speech at the event.

He said human rights are the common aspiration of mankind, adding that they are not abstract and should be protected by concrete political and legal systems.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government has committed itself to the protection and development of human rights in China, Li said.

The Chinese government has made unremitting efforts and achieved a lot in eliminating poverty, building a prosperous and democratic socialist country, and realizing the aspiration of human rights, he noted.

He said that the rapid development of China's economy during the past two decades has provided rich resources for the realization of the economic, social, and cultural rights of the Chinese people.

The Chinese people's rights to work, enjoy social security guarantee, receive education, and participate in cultural activities, are protected by the constitution and other laws, Li said.

Robinson spoke on the implementation mechanism of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the activities of her office.
