18-Year-old Worker Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Arson

The Intermediate People's Court of Jinhua City, east China's Zhejiang Province, has sentenced an 18-year-old worker to life imprisonment for setting fire on a workshop.

The court also ordered the worker, by the name of Wang Yong, to compensate the victim for 73,000 yuan (US$8,800).In March Wang, who came from a village, was recommended to work in Jinhua City Hengda Printing Company. In early August, he quit his job because he thought his wages were far too low. After his request to get his wages paid before his departure was rejected many times, he flew into a rage and used a lighter to set fire on the workshop in which he had worked.

The fire burned down the workshop building and machines, causing a direct loss estimated at 810,000 yuan (nearly US$97,600).
