East China Province Speeds Up Marine Industry

The marine industry in East China's Jiangsu Province is developing rapidly to make more contribution to the province's economy for the tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-05), sources from the provincial government have said.

"We should take advantage of the favorable geographic conditions and rich natural resources to further tap the potential so as to yield greater economic benefits," said Ji Yunshi, the province's governor as saying at a recent meeting on the development of the industry.

Ji urged provincial and local governments to include the marine industry in the economic readjustment, which has been running smoothly in most economic sectors in the province.

In a resolution on economic and social development in the tenth Five-Year Plan, the marine industry is listed as an important growth sector.

The province is blessed with a long coastline, which has formed the so-called coastal economic belt and encompasses many cities along the Yangtze River.
