Li Peng Stresses Importance of Amending Laws

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) said that amending laws is as important as drafting new laws.

Li Peng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee, said that new connotation should be added to the existing laws and regulations to be amended.

The top legislator made the remarks during his inspection tour of Chongqing City in southwest China from November 14 to 19.

He said that the drafts on the amendments to Marriage Law and the Law on Regional Autonomy have aroused wide attention nationwide.

The NPC Standing Committee will attach great importance to suggestions from all walks of life and reflect them in the revised laws, Li said.

During the tour Li also urged to improve the management of funds for the resettlement of residents from the area of the Three Gorges Project, the largest of its kind in the world.

Li called for greater efforts to prevent construction funds from being wasted and to deal with corruption to ensure the best use of the funds. He noted that the key to the success of the project lies in the resettlement.

So far, Li said, the resettlement work has been going smoothly and all the funds for the effort has been used properly.
