HK Unemployment Rate Unchanged in August-October

Hong Kong's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in August-October 2000 was 4.8 percent and the underemployment rate 2.6 percent, unchanged from the figures recorded in July-September 2000, the Census and Statistics Department said on Monday.

According to the latest labor force statistics released by the department, comparing August-October with July-September 2000, decreases in the unemployment rate were seen mainly in restaurants, import and export trade and wholesale trade sectors, offsetting increases seen in decoration and maintenance and transport sectors.

The size of the total labor force in August-October 2000, at 3,392,000, was marginally smaller than the 3,395,000 in July-September 2000. And the number of employed persons in August-October 2000, at 3,227,000, was almost the same as the 3,227,200 in July-September 2000.

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed persons dropped from 167,800 to 165,000 and that of underemployed persons from 89,600 to 87,000.
