Second-Generation AIBO Introduced to HKThe second-generation of AIBO, an autonomous entertainment robot developed by Japan's Sony Corporation, was introduced to Hong Kong Monday.In recognition of Hong Kong's technological familiarity and strong market demand for high-tech personal entertainment devices, Hong Kong has been chosen as the first launch market for AIBO in Asia outside of Japan, according to Satoshi Amagai, president of the Entertainment Robot Company, a separate firm set up by Sony in August to help develop the consumer market for AIBO-type machines. In comparison with the first-generation AIBO launched last year, the new AIBO, which is designed to look like a lion cub instead of the kettle look of the old one, displays more emotions. The new AIBO, equipped with sensors and LEDs to express happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and dislike by talking, body language and twinkling eyes and tails, will cost 12,000 HK dollars (US$1,538). It can recognize up to 50 simple English words and act according to these commands. Moreover, owners can name their AIBO, which will respond to being called with actions and special electronic sounds. AIBO is a Japanese word meaning friend and is also the acronym of "artificial intelligence robot."
