Shanghai Unicom Tries out GSM Antenna System

The American Metawave Communications Corp recently announced a field trial of its global system for mobile communications (GSM) smart antenna system in Shanghai.

The country's largest and most capacity constrained wireless market, Shanghai is expected to build an Asian base for Metawave to promote its leading smart antenna system.

"The trial by China Unicom is a strategic move to improve signal quality and data service to its customers," said Bob Hunsberger, president and chief executive officer of Metawave, a global company that increases voice and data capacity for wireless networks.

China Unicom Group Shanghai Corporation (Shanghai Unicom) in September deployed Metawave's SpotLight smart antenna system to test the interference reduction and capacity improvement capability of the system.

Handling commercial cellular traffic in October, the equipment proved to be a cost-effective means of adding network capacity, enhancing signal quality and increasing channel loading and call processing.

With the mobile subscriber population exploding in China, increasing the capacity of the wireless network is urgently needed to meet increasing complaints about GSM network's low channel loading in the country.

And the Shanghai Unicom said Metawave's smart antennas would greatly help improve its network and deliver better quality services to customers.
