China Increases R&D Investment
Research and development (R&D) investment in China increased to a record 0.83 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1999.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in Beijing November 20 that it was the first time for R&D investment to exceed 0.8 percent of GDP.
In 1999, Chinese government and enterprises spent a total of 67.89 billion yuan on research and development, 12.78 billion yuan more than in 1998. Each R&D personnel spent 83,000 yuan on average, an increase of 10,000 yuan over the previous year.
