More Taiwan Investors Flock to Mainland

Taiwan's businesses are looking to increase their investments in the mainland, attracted by the nation's coming entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

A boom in the mainland's contracted Taiwanese investments illustrates the trend, said Liu Xueqin, a senior researcher with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Taiwan investors pledged an investment totaling US$2.73 billion to the mainland in the first nine months of this year, up nearly 21 percent on the same period last year, statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Trade an Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) indicate.

With low costs of labor, land and materials and a shared language, the Chinese mainland is a first choice investment location for Taiwan business people.

"Although some Southeast Asian countries are able to offer lower costs than China now, they have a smaller market demand. And that has made Taiwan's investors choose the Chinese mainland instead," added Liu.
