Shanghai Cancels Improper Standards

Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial city, has canceled 139 local quality standards that were not in accordance with international rules.

These standards covered such areas as textiles, chemicals and electrical products.

An official with the Shanghai municipal government referred to the move as part of the city's efforts to prepare for the country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The city has also amended 96 local standards according to WTO rules, the official said.

Work on an international standards database and a standards service network is underway.

A recent survey indicates that about 70 percent of the products from Shanghai's major industries are manufactured in line with international quality standards.
