Geological Survey on Yangtze River StartsChina has begun a geological survey on the Yangtze River in an attempt to provide a scientific basis for harnessing this river, China's longest, which has reported a high frequency of flooding and brought enormous losses to the country throughout history.Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces in the middle reaches of the Yangtze, and the China University of Geosciences will be responsible for the survey that will concentrate on the middles reaches of the river, where flooding usually occurs. With the survey, experts hope to learn about the geological factors that lead to the common occurrence of flooding in the region, and hence propose proper suggestions for flood prevention precautions. The survey is expected to conclude by the end of the year 2002. |
