Export Exceeds 20 Billion US dollars in ShanghaiLatest statistics indicate that the export volume in China's Shanghai reached 20.8 billion US dollars in the first ten months of the year. This is the first time the top industrial and commercial center of China has had an annual export volume above 20 billion US dollars, following the footsteps of south China's Guangdong Province and the eastern province of Jiangsu. Shanghai's exports have kept growing over the past fours years, despite the impact of the Asian economic crisis, accounting for one-tenth of the country's total. From January to October this year, exports surged 38.3 percent over the same period of last year, 6.1 percent higher than the national average. An official from the municipality attributed the rise mainly to the success of the city's upgrading of the industrial structure, the diversification of export products and improvements in the trade system. The official said that in the ten months, half of the exports went to the Asian market, up 39.3 percent from the same period last year, and exports to other parts of the world also rose by more than 30 percent.
