New Observatory to Be Built in East China

A new observatory will be built on a mountain in Xuyi County, Jiangsu Province in east China, to observe celestial bodies that are close to the earth.

Experts agreed Saturday that the site for the observation station is ideal as the mountain top is flat providing broad vision and a clear atmosphere.

Lu Benkui, head of the renowned Nanjing Purple Mountain Observatory, said that a telescope will be fixed in the new station to detect celestial bodies that pose a potential threat to the earth.

The project, launched by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Jiangsu Province, is expected to be completed by 2002, he said.
