Major Semiconductor Company Set Up in Shanghai
A major semiconductor company was established Saturday in the Pudong New District of Shanghai, signaling that China has caught up to the world's advanced level of semiconductor and integrated circuit production.
With a total investment of US$1.63 billion, Shanghai Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation Ltd. is expected to produce 50,000 eight-inch silicon chips monthly when in full operation in 2002.
The chips are for computers, telecommunication equipment, consumer electronics, IC cards and other electronic products, a company official said.
China exported US$7.5 billion worth of semiconductor products last year and the figure for this year is expected to approach US$10 billion.
