Thai Vice PM Meets Chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Thai vice prime minister and commerce minister Supachai Panitchpakdi meets Abulaiti Abudurexiti, chairman of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Bangkok late Friday.

"With the rapid progress of China's reform and opening-up course and the imminent entry into the World Trade Organization, Thailand and China are enhancing cooperation and exchange in various fields," said Supachai.

"Moreover, the adoption of China's West Development policy provides new opportunities for Thailand to cooperate with China's west provinces and regions, including Xinjiang," he noted.

Abulaiti, who is leading a delegation of Xinjiang's senior officials and entrepreneurs for a four-day visit in the kingdom, said that with abundant resources and geographic advantages, Xinjiang has great potential for economic development.

"Now, under the West Development campaign newly launched by the central government, Xinjiang will stand on a new historical start point to wide open its doors to the world, strengthening cooperation and exchange with all the countries and regions, including Thailand," he said.

He said that Xinjiang is seeking cooperation with Thailand in economic, trade, industrial, tourism and other sectors.

During the meeting, Supachai, who will become WTO chief in 2002, said he will further promote the cooperation and exchange between Thailand and China after he takes the new job.

Abulaiti and his delegation arrived here Wednesday and will fly back to China Saturday.
