Yellow River Estuary Becomes Popular Tourism Site

Dongying, a city in east China's Shandong province, where the Yellow River charges into the Yellow Sea, has emerged as a hot tourism site.

About 65,000 tourists swarmed to the estuary during the seven-day National Day vacation this year.

During the first half of this year, tourists totaled 530,000 in number, bringing in 300 million yuan in tourism revenue, which is several times that of past years.

The Yellow River originates in Qinghai province and reaches the sea after passing seven provinces and autonomous regions in the north of China.

The alluvial plain on the estuary forms the largest, youngest and most complete wetland ecological system in the world.

With another 24 square kilometers of area added annually, the estuary has become the fastest expanding land in the world. It has a national nature reserve of 1,733 square kilometers in area, and is home to over 10 million birds.
