Sheep Embryo Transplant Project Launched in Inner Mongolia

China has built a production center for sheep embryo transplantation in the grassland of Xilin Gol Meng in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to help upgrade the local sheep breed.

The project, with an initial investment of 100 million yuan, was jointly funded by the Yichang Technology Group and America CCI Group. It includes an embryo transplantation center covering 50,000 sq. m equipped with advanced devices and a 100-sq.-km virgin grassland as the breeding farm.

Dozens of Chinese experts along with their Australian counterparts will conduct the transplanting operation before November 30 by planting test-tube embryos of fine sheep breeds into the belly of local sheep.

The embryos were all developed in an Australian library with Chinese test-tube technology. The breeding sheep will give birth to lambs that will more easily become accommodated to the local environment.

The introduction of fine sheep species is expected to help transform traditional sheep feeding and lamb processing, and to boost stockbreeding and tourist industries.
