Guangdong Reports 24 Percent Rise in Foreign Trade

South China's Guangdong Province, the country's economic powerhouse, completed US$139.6 billion worth of foreign trade in the first ten months of the year, up 24.4 percent from the same 1999 period.

Statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China Guangdong Branch said the volume accounts for 36 percent of the national foreign trade total for the January-October period this year.

The province's favorable balance of foreign trade stands at US$12.5 billion, according to the statistics.

The province exported US$76.05 billion worth of commodities from January to October, accomplishing 84.5 percent of the province's pre-set export goal of US$90 billion for this year.

Overseas-financed companies, state-owned companies and private firms were the three major exporters in the province, neighbor of Hong Kong and Macao.

During the same period, the province also imported US$63.55 billion worth of commodities, up 26.9 percent. Most of the imports were done via processing trade and general trade.
