Achievements Made at APEC Informal Meeting: Chinese FM

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said in Bandar Seri Bagewan Thursday that his government welcomed achievements made at the 8th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leadership meeting.

At a news conference at the end of the meeting, Tang said the leaders believed that Asia has rid itself of the shadow of economic crisis and stepped into an era of recovery and growth.

They said that the trends of economic globalization and the accelerating development of the "New Economy," promoted by the technological revolution, have brought both opportunities and challenges for the Asia-Pacific region.

They urged the APEC member countries to further cooperation to face the challenges and reduce the "digital gap."

Meanwhile, the leaders agreed that APEC should continue to urge another round of WTO negotiations as soon as possible.

They stressed that a healthy and fair multilateral trade system will improve the sustainable and stable growth of world trade and promote common prosperity for both the developed nations and the developing nations.

The leaders also exchanged ideas on global oil prices, calling for concerted efforts in controlling oil prices within a reasonable scope as well as cooperation in energy within the APEC framework, Tang said.
