China Takes Three Golds in World Cup Short Course Swimming

Three of Chinese women swimmers triumphed in the final-day competitions at the second leg of the FINA World Cup short course swimming meeting in Maryland Thursday evening.

Zhan Shu who won the 200m individual medley on Wednesday, took her second gold medal by clocking in the winning time of 1:02.87 in the 100m backstroke tonight, beating Dominique Diezi of Switzerland and American Suzy Catterson to second and third respectively.

Both Ruan Yi and Yang Yu, each won one silver yesterday, had their gold-medal feat as Ruan took the 200m butterfly in 2:11.73, and Yang won the 400m freestyle in 4:08.61.

A pair of American swimmers finished second and third in the butterfly through Cara Lane and Jessica Brosch, while Brazilian Monique Ferreira took the 400m freestyle silver and American Cara Lane third.

However, Slovakian Martina Moravcova remained to be the brightest star of the event as she repeated her Wednesday's triple gold medal performance tonight.

After taking the 50m and 200m freestyles and the 100m butterfly titles, the Slovakian swimmer, two-time silver medalist at the Sydney Olympic Games, had her second consecutive hat-trick feat in the 100m freestyle, 100m individual medley and 50m butterfly.

She clocked 53.59 seconds to take the 100m freestyle, timed in 1:01.10 for the 100m medley title and won the 50m butterfly in 26.60 seconds.

The World Cup tournament was being held merely two montsh away from the Olympics, resulting in a weak field with only seven Olympians.
