China: Under-Representation of Developing Nations Should Be Addressed

China on November 16 attached importance to addressing the under-representation of developing countries in the Security Council of the United Nations.

Addressing the question on the basis of the principle of equitable geographical representation is an overriding priority in the reform of the council, said Ambassador Wang Yingfan, Chinese Permanent Representative to the UN

Taking the floor at a UN General Assembly session, Wang expressed the hope that the general assembly will strengthen its efforts and quicken up its steps to address the issue as broad agreement has been achieved on it.

Describing the council's reform pivotal to the future of the UN and concerning vital interests of every member state, Wang emphasized that the outcome of the reform should represent the collective will of all member states.

It is important for the council to strengthen communication and consultation between members and non-member states, including consultation with troops-contributing countries and other countries and regional organizations concerned, Wang added.
