International Automobile Expo Opens in Western China

An international automobile industry exposition opened Thursday in this capital city of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, attracting over 100 domestic and overseas enterprises involved in automobile production and sales.

This is the first time that China has held a large automobile exposition in the western areas.

The three-day expo arranged four exhibitions on commercial vehicles and family cars, automobile testing, automobile repairs and the accessory industry, and all types of electronic products.

The automotive industry in Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces and several other regions in the western part of China has achieved rapid development in recent years.

Many foreign automobile producers have shown great interest in the market in the area. General Motors Corporation opened its first repair service shops in China in 1996 in Xi'an. The company also plans to expand its business in Chongqing, Chengdu and some other key cities in the region, according to a business delegate from GM.

The automobile expo will be held every year in the future to improve the sector's development in China's western area, according to the organizer of the expo.
