Allegation of Chinese "Encroachment" on Indian Territories Groundless: SpokesmanThe allegation of frequent encroachment of Chinese armed forces on Indian territories is totally groundless, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said November 16 in Beijing.Spokesman Sun Yuxi made the remark at a regular press briefing in response to a question regarding an article in Britain's Intelligence Digest that alleged the situation in the Sino-Indian border areas has got tense. He said the border troops of China and India have maintained stability in the border regions and enhanced mutual understanding and friendship by handling all border affairs timely, appropriately and amicably. Sun said that no major problems have surfaced ever since the two governments reached an agreement in 1993 on the maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the line of actual control in the China-India border areas and an agreement in 1996 on increasing confidence-building measures in the military field. The two sides have made important progress through the eighth round meeting of diplomatic and military experts group on the Sino-Indian boundary issue held several days ago, the spokesman said. Sun said it should be pointed out that the boundary question between China and India is "a historical question created and left over by British colonists at the beginning of this century." The allegation of frequent encroachment by the Chinese armed forces on Indian territories is totally groundless, he said, adding that the fallacy of possible deterioration of Sino-Indian relations arising from conflicts of Sino-Indian security interests and complicated border disputes is baseless.
