China Vows to Do Well in Future Telecom Competition

China possesses a potentially huge telecom market and can accomplish a lot in the third generation of mobile communications domain, experts said.

Telecom experts, attending the seminar on information technology and industry of ongoing 2000 Shanghai Science and Technology Forum, were optimistic about China's future development in the mobile technology market.

China is one of the world's largest mobile telecom market, with its predicted number of mobile phone users to hit 100 million by 2005 and 300 million in 2010, so there would be 40 million new users added on a yearly basis, the most rapid increase in the world.

The country's telecom administration highly emphasizes researching and developing the third generation mobile communications, on which an official estimation and coordination panel has been set up.

China's research group for standardization of wireless communications has been admitted to the international standardization organization.

Some China-invented technologies for the third generation of mobile telecom were adopted internationally, which promoted the country's status and influence in the field.

"We must grasp the opportunities to develop new telcom technologies and take a leading role in future international competition," Guo Jianhua, vice-general engineer of Shanghai Telecom Company.

According to the time schedule, the third generation of mobile phones will be put into use in 2002 and form its independent market in 2010, dominating the market while the second generation gradually falls into disuse.
