Academic Symposium on Chin Ping Mei Held in Shandong

Jointly sponsored by China Chin Ping Mei Society, Shandong University and Wulian People's Government, the 4th International Symposium on Chin Ping Mei (Gold Vase Plum) Studies was lately held in Wulian County of Shandong Province.

More than 130 scholars attended the symposium, including Wei Ziyun, Mei Jie, Yuan Shishuo, Cui Rongche, Ning Zongyi, Wang Rumei, Chen Meilin, Huang Lin, Du Weimo, Liu Hui and others from China's mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Russia, France and ROK. Centering on the theme of going in for a "study review, visualizing the prospect and an exchange of views", they had wide discourses on many a varied subjects as the writer's birth place and writing career, the book's content and artistic achievement, especially its impact on Chinese culture.

Chin Ping Mei, a banned book back in Qing time (1644-1911), has now been regarded by scholars as an epoch work marking China's literary history and a great work in the treasure house of world literature. Since publishing it has exerted long standing profound influence on Chinese literature, providing valuable materials for studying into Chinese philosophy, aesthetics, culture and society as a whole.
