Gore Campaign Favors Full, Fair and Accurate Recount Result

US Vice President Al Gore campaign said on Tuesday that they are still looking forward to a recount result based on full, fair and accurate count although Florida secretary of state announced that Texas Governor George W. Bush still leads in recount tally in the state.

"It is obvious that this election is getting closer with every set of numbers that she (Secretary of State Katherine Harris) releases," Gore campaign spokeswoman Jenny Backus said.

She made the remarks shortly after Harris, a Republican and co- chairman of Bush campaign in Florida, announced that Bush leads 300 votes over Gore in the recount results submitted by all 67 counties in Florida before the 5:00 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) Tuesday deadline.

Backus noted that there are three counties still performing hand recounts of votes and "We are looking forward to the full, fair and accurate count being completed."

Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties will reportedly go ahead with hand recount of ballots in the November 7 presidential election although election officials of the three countries have submitted machine recount results to the office of secretary of state to meet the deadline.

While announcing the official recount tally in Florida, Harris said her office was requiring officials in the three counties to explain the "facts and circumstances" that support their desire to proceed with hand recounts.

The secretary of state set 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) Wednesday as the deadline for the three counties to reply.

A Florida judge ruled earlier Tuesday to uphold the 5:00 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) deadline set by Harris for all 67 counties in the state to submit recount results, but the judge also said that the secretary of state had "discretion" in responding to counties seeking to file results of hand recount at a later date.
