EU Expansion: Priority of Swedish Presidency of the Union

Romanian Foreign Minister Petre Roman on Tuesday met with his visiting Swedish counterpart Anna Lindh, the two officials discussing the problems Romania faced in the EU admission process and its progress in this direction.

The Swedish diplomat is on a tour of the capital cities of several candidate countries to the EU in the perspective of Sweden's takeover of the EU presidency on January 1, 2001.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy reaffirmed "Romania's clear commitment to follow the path towards a better social and material situation" of Romanian citizens without which there are no chances for the adherence to the EU.

Lindh underlined that the priority of the Swedish presidency of the EU would be the expansion of the Union.

The possibility of the opening by Romania of some new negotiation chapters within the EU admission process was also discussed within the meeting.
