Scheme Set up for China's ChildrenChina is launching a nationwide scheme, namely, the Safe Healthy Growth Project, to safeguard the health and well-being of children and teenagers."It will help children and teenagers avoid dropping out of school and keep them away from illness, harm and crime," said Chen Muhua, president of the China Children' and Teenagers' Fund, noting that the project will contribute to the happiness of millions of families in China. The project is being launched by the fund and the Safe Production Bureau under the State Economic and Trade Commission. More than ten million books concerning children's healthy growth will be given to the public free of charge. In the meantime, some training centers, hot lines and a website will also give access to the program. As part of the project, a charity show titled "paying attention to the future and saving our children" will be staged on December 6 in Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province. Chinese scholars have called for more attention to children's health care because the children's welfare system in China lags behind those in developed countries. Figures indicate that children in poverty-stricken areas in China make up four percent of the country's entire population while those same youngsters account for 15 percent of the country's mortality and malnutrition rate. |
