Florida's Palm Beach County to Go Ahead with Hand Recount

Election officials of Florida's Palm Beach County, a focal point in the US post- election controversy, on Tuesday decided to go ahead with a full manual recount of ballots in the November 7 presidential election despite a 5:00 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) deadline to submit vote results.

The officials, meanwhile, said they will return the results of a machine recount to the office of the secretary of state to meet the deadline.

Hand recount in the heavily-Democratic county, where there have been widespread complaints of irregularities and voter confusion on election day, was suspended earlier Tuesday due to conflicting court decisions on the issue.

Whether the results of the manual recount, which could take several days, are accepted or not at a later date will depend on decision to be made by Florida's Secretary of State Katherine Harris.
