HK Chief Executive Joins Talks on APEC Agenda

Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa joined leaders from other Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies Wednesday to set Thursday's agenda of the APEC gathering being held in Brunei.

The talks on Thursday are expected to focus on creating an impetus for a new round of world trade talks, according to a spokesman of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Oil price will be a main topic for Thursday's discussion at the annual leaders retreat Thursday at the exclusive Jerudong Polo Club on Brunei's northern coast, the spokesman said.

Earlier Wednesday Tung was invited to a breakfast meeting with Chinese President Jiang Zemin and held bilateral talks with Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, said the spokesman.

Tung also took part in an APEC ritual -- the fitting of the attire to be worn for the annual leaders retreat. This year, leaders are tipped to wear a traditional, loose-fitting Bruneian shirt.
