Long-Distance Education Allows Chinese People More Access to Universities
Through the Internet more Chinese people will have access to universities through long-distance education courses.
The latest statistics from the Ministry of Education (MOE) shows that since MOE approved Qinghua University, Zhejiang University, Hunan University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China now has over 30 universities offering long-distance education on trial basis.
China has completed the construction of the Chinese Education and Research Network (CERNET), which is now the second largest network in the country.
Experts held that during 1996-2000, China's long-distance education entered a new era.
The MOE has also raised the speed of CERNET to 155 megabytes per-second in six cities. The CERNET now links over 700 universities and institutes in China, with over 2.5 million users.
An official from MOE noted that a major reason for developing long-distance education is to readjust educational resources between the west and the east.
