China to Hold Taekwondo Championship in Shanghai

The 2000 Wanji Cup National Taekwondo Championship, the largest at the highest level of its kind, will be held in 16 events at eight levels from November 24 to 26 in Shanghai Jiading Gym.

Over 200 taekwondo stalwarts including Sydney taekwondo Olympic title winner Chen Zhong, all taekwondo Olympians to the Sydney Olympics and other first-rate taekwondo contestants from over 50 teams throughout China will fight for the championship. The Shanghai, Qianwei Wanji, Henan, and Zhejiang teams are predicted having the strength to win the title.

Sources say that currently a world total of 65 million persons are having a training course on taekwondo, an event with its history originating in the Korean Peninsula. Since taekwondo first started in China in 1996, China has made big progress in the event and has won champions in past Olympics and World Championships.

Shenzhen Wanji Medicine Co. Ltd. acts sponsor of the 2000 Wanji Cup National Taekwondo Championship. Wanji is a company claiming great credit in helping develop taekwondo in China. A contract has been signed by it with the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission for a donation of RMB$10 million over a period of ten years in advancing China's taekwondo.
