Better Diets and More Exercise Benefit Diabetes Patients

Diabetes can be prevented by balancing a good diet with exercise, Yin Dakui, vice-Minister of Health said.

Yin stressed that doctors should go further into the community to teach people how to prevent and control the condition at the gathering marking World Diabetes Day on November 14.

To mark this year's World Diabetes Day, three diabetes patients from Beijing's Yanfangdian community cooked six dishes believed to be suitable for people with the condition.

The dishes, including stir-fried celery, cucumber and chicken, were cooked with only one spoon of oil each.

"Thanks to menus designed by doctors at community health centers, I no longer need to take medicine," said one of the "cooks", Zhu Fengming.

Doctors advise sufferers to eat less tinned and instant food. Eating four or five times a day is preferred to the traditional three meals per day, they said.

A plan, containing detailed menus for breakfast, lunch, supper and two other meals and suggested physical exercises have been given to every patient in the community, according to Shen Qiang of the Yangfangdian community service center.

Zhang Xiuling, an expert from the center, said the health plans ensured the patients in his community kept a healthy balance between the quantity of energy absorbed and the amount of heat released.

Jogging, fast walking and cycling are good exercises for sufferers, he said.
