Three Taiwan Parties Call for Return to '1992 Cross-Straits Common Views'Leaders of the three main opposition parties, the Kuomintang, People First Party and New Party held a round-table conference in Taipei on November 11.The joint statement published by the conference requires that the Taiwan authorities come back to the "1992 Cross-Straits Common Views", hold a "national unification council" conference as soon as possible, immediately conduct "three exchanges" (exchange of mails, trade and air and shipping services with the mainland of the motherland), and adjust their policy of "adopting patience instead of impatience". The high-level conference of the three parties was held under the continued turbulent political and economic situation in the Island and the unstable feelings of Taiwan people. Leaders of the three parties attended the meeting and issued a joint statement after the meeting, enumerating the 10 major chaotic phenomena, including the deteriorating investment environment, the sudden rise in the suffering index of Taiwan people and the increasingly grim situation of the cross-Straits relationship. They also put forward six major policy-related propositions, such as re-establishing investment confidence, wiping out "black money" and intensifying the mechanism of consultation and cooperation between the three parties. With regard to cross-Strait relations, the three parties unanimously and firmly advocated return to the "1992 Cross-Strait Common Views", resuming cross-Strait consultations as quickly as possible, hold a "national unification council" conference at the earliest possible date, immediately conducting consultation on the topic regarding the "three exchanges", and adjusting the policy of "adopting patience instead of impatience". The declaration evoked strong repercussions among various circles in the Island. |
