Mongolian President Meets Putin

Mongolian President Nachagyn Bagabandy met with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in Ulan Bator.

Russia and Mongolia have long-term friendly relations, but there has been no summit meeting between the leaders of the two countries in the past few years. At the same time, bilateral trade turnover has declined sharply, said Putin at a news conference after the meeting.

He hoped that Mongolia and Russia would further their bilateral relations, cooperate in the international arena, and pay more attention to economic cooperation.

Bagabandy, on his part, said there are no controversial political issues between the two countries.

The two countries have successfully established new prospects for cooperation based on equal rights and mutual benefit, said the Mongolian president, while adding that Mongolia is always accessible to foreign investors.

On the same day, the two sides also signed the Ulan Bator Declaration, which confirms the agreement on friendly relations and cooperation the two countries made on January 20, 1993.

Mongolia and Russia will cooperate in various fields in the new century based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality and mutual benefit.

Putin also met with Mongolian State Great Hural (parliament) Chairman Lhamsurengyn Enebish and Mongolian Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar before leaving for Brunei to attend the upcoming APEC forum.

Putin arrived in Mongolia on Monday evening.
